Our Story

Efforts are underway to fulfill a key element of our organization’s mission: To operate a museum and historical library that also serves as headquarters for the Longswamp Township Historical Society and a gathering place for the community.

Our plan is to repurpose reusable materials from the severely dilapidated 1875 Mertztown train station to aid in a visual recreation of the station’s interior. The replicated interior will be housed inside a metal board and batten shell and constructed to mimic the shape and current paint colors of the station’s exterior. Additional square footage will be incorporated into the footprint of the new structure to provide adequate storage and volunteer workspace. Unlike the original proposal, which required raising most needed funds before construction could begin, the current plan offers a staged approach: The ability to pause construction, as needed, to raise additional needed funds to continue the project.

Our museum and historical library building will be erected in the Longswamp Township Park on land leased to the Historical Society by the Longswamp Township Board of Supervisors. Construction of the exterior shell and building pad is expected to begin in the spring of 2024.

A 1941 Reading Company caboose, acquired in mid-2023 to serve as ancillary museum space, already resides in this location. Funds raised for the caboose and our museum and historical library building have come exclusively from Historical Society members, residents who live(d) in the Longswamp area, businesses that operate in the Longswamp area, a grant from the Breidegam Family Foundation, Inc., and fundraising proceeds—the most impactful of which have been sale proceeds from our “Village Series” of publications, which use photographs and captions to capture the historic essence of each village and hamlet in Longswamp Township.

You can help provide vital support to make this project a reality. Donations of all sizes are welcome through our website store or by check made payable to Longswamp Township Historical Society and mailed to P. O. Box 610, Mertztown PA 19535-0610.
