MERTZTOWN TRAIN STATION PROJECT PLAN
The Longswamp Township Historical Society (LTHS) is working with Longswamp Township staff, general contractor Stanley Bauman, Jr., sub-contractor Matthew Leid, and Watkins Architect, LTD to assess, dismantle, and restore the Mertztown Train Station to ensure its life within the community. The project is designed in multiple phases (see below).
At this time (March 2022), the proposed assessment, dismantling, and move of the Mertztown Train Station is projected to cost an estimated $406,200.20. The previous estimate from 2020, was $307,006.75.

Construction Phases
Phase I: Assess Current Condition & Permits, estimated cost: $19,585.92
($31,700; $16,100 has already been paid to the architect and not included in the updated estimate)
This phase consists of obtaining appropriate permits for the project and the assessment of the train station's current condition. Issues like dry rot, termites, etc. will be addressed. Detailed sketch drawings and photograph documentation will be completed of the building and its architectural materials including its framing members. Mill work, including trim details windows, doors, and siding will be documented for possible replication.
Phase II: Dismantle, estimated cost: $39,462.47 ($28,871)
Windows and doors will be salvaged for restoration and used for any need replication. Roofing, siding, and any other materials in poor condition will be removed and appropriately disposed of. The station will be securely stored until the new site is ready and work can progress.
It is estimated that two storage units may cost an additional $2,400.
Phase III: Site Preparation, estimated cost: $27,936 ($19,800)
Site work to include the preparation of the new site within Longswamp Township Park; excavation, back fill and preparation for the construction of a concrete foundation and basement.
Phase IV: Concrete Work, estimated cost: $49,974.40 (35,420)
This phase includes the pouring and forming of the concrete foundation and basement and the ADA-accessible walkways connecting the station to existing public facilities.
Phase V: Restoration, estimated cost: $222,997.41 ($158,142)
Set frame of station on foundation and install any replicated wood siding, standing seam metal roof, windows, doors, and mill work, damp-proofing, insulation, interior drywall, and finishes,
Phase VI: Mechanical (electrical, mechanical), estimated cost: $43,844 ($36,067)
The phase will include the installation of an HVAC system and electricity to the station.
